Kenzie Rumberger: Trusted With the Ball

Against Trinity in the WPIAL playoffs, Kenzie Rumberger had a job to do: stay calm, help take control, and find a way to win with her teammates. Being a freshman didn’t change that.

Looking back, she remembers what the win confirmed: her grade didn’t determine whether she belonged on the court.

“The freshman title didn’t matter,” she said. “All my teammates believed in me and trusted me.”

The 5’8” Class of 2029 guard from South Fayette High School in McDonald, Pennsylvania, earned second-team all-section recognition as a freshman during the Lions’ 2025–26 WPIAL and PIAA Class 5A championship season. She is bringing that experience to SLAAM under coach Cornelious Nesbit.

Her first instinct when describing her game is to talk about creating opportunities for someone else.

“I love getting everyone involved,” Rumberger said.

A point guard who can also play shooting guard, she likes attacking the basket and deciding what the defense gives her: a finish, a pull-up, or a pass out to a teammate. Asked what her team can count on, she goes straight to finding someone open.

“Kenzie has a great feel for the game and knows how to create opportunities for herself and her teammates,” said her SLAAM coach, Cornelious Nesbit.

“She plays with composure, makes good decisions, and has the ability to score when needed. She’s the type of guard who can control the game and make big plays when needed.”

“Her unselfishness and basketball IQ make everyone around her better.”

Her development goals reflect that same sense of responsibility. She wants to be trusted to bring the ball up the floor and, in her words, “just do any job that a coach wants me to do.”

The work happens in focused stretches. If her shooting needs attention, she gets shots up on her own and returns to it over multiple days or sessions. She identifies a part of her game to improve, then gives it sustained time.

At home, basketball has always given her someone to watch and learn from. Her older sister has been a particular inspiration, and her older brother also played growing up.

She has spent time in several sports herself. Rumberger plays volleyball, runs track casually in the summer, and previously played catcher in softball. Basketball is the one she wants to take into college.

Watching older South Fayette players reach that level has helped her picture it for herself. She chose SLAAM because she believes the program can help her develop toward that goal.

“Playing at the next level would mean a lot,” she said.

At SLAAM, Rumberger brings playoff experience, a willingness to take responsibility, and a game built around getting teammates involved. She wants to keep expanding what she can do under Nesbit, help her new team win, and work toward college basketball. She has already earned trust on a championship team. Now she has another team to contribute to and more of her game to develop.
