Cassidy Walsh: For the Girls Up Next

Before she hit six three-pointers at Duke, Cassidy Walsh was a kid competing against her older siblings in the backyard.

Basketball started with family, fun, and a love for the game. It took her to Pitt, where the hometown kid got to compete at the Division I level close to the people who mattered most. “Being a hometown kid, Pitt was an easy yes for me.”

Playing on a stage like Duke’s remains one of her favorite memories. But when Walsh talks about what basketball gave her, she returns to the lessons that stayed with her after her playing career: discipline, confidence, and the ability to work through adversity. “The game taught me confidence, self-discipline, how to overcome adversity, and the courage to go after what I want in life.”

Now, through her company, Unbounded, she is helping other athletes build those qualities for themselves. That same perspective came into the gym when she helped lead SLAAM tryouts. What is Unbounded?

Founded by Walsh, Unbounded is an athlete development company focused on skill development and mental performance. It serves athletes across sports, with a goal of helping them become the best versions of themselves on and off the court.

For Walsh, those two sides of development belong together. Her Division I experience taught her that an athlete’s mindset can have a real impact on their growth. Building skills matters. So does developing the confidence to use them, the resilience to face challenges, and the belief to pursue a goal that feels out of reach.

“I created Unbounded because I want to help athletes grow beyond the game of basketball.”

That purpose gives her work a connection to something every sports family recognizes: an athlete’s progress includes both what they can do and how they handle the demands of doing it. Walsh wants athletes to recognize their potential and have the courage to act on it. The aim extends beyond their next game or season to the people they are becoming. What she looks for in the SLAAM gym -

At SLAAM tryouts, Walsh looked for players who competed, worked hard, brought a positive attitude, and were willing to learn.

“Skill is important, but so are effort, coachability, and how you respond to challenges.” For a player, that is a standard she can act on every time she steps into the gym. Bring effort. Listen. Compete. Be willing to work through something you have not mastered yet. For parents and coaches, it puts the focus on habits that support lasting development. A girl’s current skill level is part of her story. Her willingness to learn and her response to difficulty help shape what comes next.

Walsh hoped the girls left tryouts feeling confident, motivated, and excited to keep improving. Demanding effort and building belief can happen together. Young athletes need adults who hold them to a standard and help them see that they can grow into it.

Having Walsh help lead SLAAM tryouts brought those ideas into the gym through someone who has experienced the demands of Division I basketball firsthand. Her presence connected the work in front of the girls to the goals many of them are pursuing. The work goes beyond basketball

To girls working toward the next level, Walsh’s advice is direct: believe in yourself, trust the work, and go after your goals. There will be challenges along the way. How you respond matters.

To the parents and coaches beside them, she offers a reminder of the responsibility that comes with that role:

“Remember, you’re not just developing basketball players, you’re helping shape the people they become.”

That responsibility belongs at the center of the SLAAM standard. Every practice is an opportunity to build skill and discipline. Every challenge is a chance to develop resilience. Every coach who expects more can help a girl begin to expect more of herself.

Walsh knows how far those lessons can carry an athlete. Through Unbounded and her work in the SLAAM gym, she is helping the girls up next begin to see it, too.
